Heat pumps with an outdoor unit

Air/water heat pumps with an outdoor unit are the most common solution in residential construction. The heat pump is located outside, for example in the garden or on the roof, and supplies heat to the indoor system. Because the unit is outside, the technical room inside remains well-organised and compact.

Technique

How does an air source heat pump with an outdoor unit work?

An outdoor air-to-water heat pump draws energy from the outside air and converts it into heat for the home.

The outdoor unit contains, among other things, a fan, evaporator and compressor. The generated heat is transferred indoors and used there for:

  • Space heating
  • Tap water
  • Or a combination of these

The outdoor unit always works in conjunction with indoor components, such as an indoor module, buffer tank or domestic hot water storage tank. Together, they form one system.

Practice

What does an outdoor setup look like in practice?

With an air/water heat pump with an outdoor unit, the heat pump is located outside, the placement varies depending on the home and situation. Common setups include:

  • In the garden or against the facade
  • On a flat roof
  • On a sloping roof

For terraced houses and compact developments, placement on the roof is increasingly being chosen. This keeps the outdoor space clear and limits the impact of noise on the immediate surroundings.

The position of the unit influences the performance of the system. The distance from the dwelling, the airflow around the unit, and the routing of pipes play an important role in this.

Our solution

Burgerhout Elytra Delta-Discovery Air

When an outdoor unit is installed on a pitched roof, it must be integrated safely, stably, and neatly. For this purpose, the Burgerhout Elytra Delta-Discovery Air (DDA) has been developed.

The DDA is a housing that protects the heat pump from weather influences and provides a sleek, neat solution on the roof. The housing is tailored to the heat pump and the roof pitch.

Why choose the Burgerhout Elytra DDA?

  • A solution that fits the shape of the roof
  • External placement outside the dwelling's insulation layer
  • Maintenance and inspection from the inside via an inspection hatch
  • Fast assembly through prefab and modular construction
  • Safe installation on sloping roofs
  • Optional windscreen to limit wind impact

This way the installation remains manageable, and the result neat.
