Joint certification
CO certification is mandatory for anyone working on central heating appliances, air supply, and flue gas extraction. It requires skilled technicians, clear work processes, and the use of appropriate materials. This is how you demonstrate safety and provide reassurance to your customers.
What does a company need to have in order?
The government appoints a few fixed components to obtain a CO certificate:
- Installers hold a CO Safety Certificate (exam, and retraining where necessary).
- The company operates according to a recognised assessment guideline, for example BRL 6000-25 (InstallQ) or BRL K25000 (Kiwa).
- The procedure is laid down in a quality manual, so you can demonstrate how you work and check.
- A certifying body tests this via an audit.
This falls under CO certification
The certification addresses precisely those components which determine the safety of the installation:
- The gas combustion appliance: install, repair, maintain and commission.
- Combustion air supply: work on air supply facilities is subject to certification.
- Flue extraction: the same applies to flue extraction and associated facilities.
In practice, a distinction is often made between work carried out on individual installations and on collective air supply and flue gas discharge installations.
Demonstrably effective work: processes, documentation, and control
CO-certification demands more than just good assembly. You need to be able to demonstrate that your work is correct. That's why companies work according to an approved certification scheme and document their procedures in a quality manual. A certifying body then assesses whether the organisation meets the requirements.
Additionally, there is transparency for the client: certified companies are listed in the register, installers can identify themselves, and the CO-FREE logo is used.
Burgerhout in this story
Burgerhout is not a certifying body. Burgerhout does, however, help you to construct flue gas discharge and air supply in a way that is practical: clear, installable, and compliant with regulations. This provides peace of mind on the construction site and clarity in the documentation.
